FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Valuable lessons for new hunters, from someone who still remembers what it’s like to head afield for the first time

#1 START SMALL
If you’ve never hunted, small game is a great place to start. For some reason, pheasants, grouse, rabbits and other small game don’t attract the same amount of attention from new hunters that big game such as deer and elk do. Yet, for a new hunter, small-game hunting has much lower barriers to entry. The licences are more accessible, all-in costs are generally lower, gear needs are minimal and seasons are longer. The learning curve is also much less steep—that’s true both before, and after, the shot. The first time I had a deer on the ground, I felt overwhelmed both by its size and the task of getting it to the truck. My first pheasant, on the other hand, was much easier to manage. Looking back, I would have been much better prepared for dealing with that deer had I spent more time hunting small game first.
#2 BUY USED GEAR
Having proper gear or more gear doesn’t necessarily make you a better hunter, but it does make hunting better. With quality equipment, you’re more comfortable, more efficient and more effective, all of which enhances the hunting experience. Of course, good gear isn’t cheap, but you don’t have to pay top dollar, either—items from premium hunting brands can found on the used market in like-new condition for 40 to 80 per cent off the original price.

Finding used equipment that suits you can require patience as you watch for the right items to appear at the right price, but it’s well worth the wait. Hardcore hunters are always looking for an edge, tweaking their systems and selling their old equipment to make room for the latest and greatest gear. This habit gives new (and thrifty) hunters the opportunity to pick up great gear at a discount. Even better, watch for items that have transferrable warranties. This reduces your risk as a buyer, and you may end up with something of excellent quality you can pass down after years of enjoyment.
