Professional guidance: Fly Fishing Chetumal
Open since 2019, the Fly Fishing Chetumal guide service, operated by guide and expert fly angler Carlos Godoy, along with his son, Carlos Jr., offers the expertise needed to successfully target these waters. In addition, both speak fluent English, allowing the guide-angler communication that’s so essential to successful saltwater fly fishing.
Their modern 23-foot pangas are specifically designed for flats fishing, with spacious casting decks and comfortable seats. Pangas are remarkably versatile, and can access everything from the skinny water of remote flats to the deeper channels where migratory tarpon congregate. There are always two guides in the boat, one running the motor and poling, and one spotting on the bow, meaning that you’ve got four experienced eyes on the lookout for fish, as well as your own. (But believe me, the guides always see the fish first, at least for your first few days.) They can provide all necessary tackle, though most anglers prefer to bring their own gear. Full-day trips include lunch, beverages and pick-up by boat at their lodging partner, the oceanside Villa Marcela. In addition, Fly Fishing Chetumal has recently been selected as a Yellow Dog Flyfishing destination.
