Los Roques is a tight-knit scattering of islands, reefs and atolls located less than 200 kilometres from Caracas, and an ideal habitat for both bonefish and bonefish anglers. Here you’ll find bones of four pounds and better on the tepid tidal flats, cruising knee-deep water far out into the Caribbean. This is also an ideal site for wade-fishing and sight-casting to these silver ghosts, as they forage crabs in the shallows.
And take good gear—these gentle-looking, near-translucent fish hit hard, and can scream off 200 yards of line on just the first run. Fly rods with slime lines are best for the skittish bonefish in the shallows, though out in deep channels, spinning gear will do.
Charming posadas provide lodging on Gran Roque, and most are set up to run anglers out to the surrounding flats, and find experienced guides to accompany them. Or for a more rustic experience, you can stay in a tent on Crasqui Island. Gateway is through the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetia, with regular flights to Gran Roque.
